Over the course of the 1980s, the chemist and medical plant researcher Dr Roger Kalbermatten developed a method for transforming medicinal plants into essential mother tinctures that respects the essence of those plants. At the core of the process stands the mortar grinder developed by Dr Kalbermatten and his team. The method allowed a reversion to the original 3–5 drops per day that were effective in Samuel Hahnemann’s time.
In 1991, Dr Roger Kalbermatten and his wife Hildegard Kalbermatten, along with Godehard and Marie Marie Thérèse, Count and Countess von Hoensbroech, established Ceres Heilmittel AG, as a company specialising in herbal mother tinctures produced in a manner that respects the essence of the plants. The company was originally based in Chrissibuech in the commune of Hefenhofen in Thurgau. A subsidiary was established in Germany in 1992 to distribute Ceres mother tinctures in Germany and Austria: Ceres Heilmittel GmbH in Türnich (Kerpen) near Cologne.
After a period of initial difficulties rooted in a widely held view at the time, namely that only high-dosage herbal medicinal products could be effective, Ceres mother tinctures began to be prescribed by doctors, chemists, chemist’s assistants and naturopaths more and more often. Instrumental in this success were the Kalbermattens’ outreach activities, which involved seminars that focussed on the significance of the information and life energy of Ceres mother tinctures, which are no less important in terms of efficacy as the active ingredients. Intensive efforts went towards providing seminar offerings in Germany to encourage more widespread use of Ceres mother tinctures in that country as well.
In 2002, the company moved into its new harmonically built building in Kesswil (Thurgau), where respect for plants’ essences in the transformation process is coupled with modern production technology. In 2012, production of Ceres mother tinctures began at a second facility, in Nax (Valais).
Today, Ceres Heilmittel AG transforms over 60 medicinal plants into mother tinctures and 14 medicinal plants into homoeopathic dilutions and manufactures 12 different complex remedies.
